In the world of construction, aggregates play a very important role in providing stability, strength and durability to all kinds of structures, and each type of aggregate brings unique characteristics to construction projects. This month, the Aggregates Express team is going to take a look into the specifics of four commonly used aggregates, so you can be armed with the knowledge before you take on your next construction project.

Ballast

Ballast is a coarse aggregate composed of crushed rocks, typically granite or limestone. Its primary purpose is to provide a solid foundation for railway tracks, but it’s also used in construction projects to enhance stability and drainage.

Application: In railway construction, ballast serves as a reliable support system, distributing the load of the tracks and keeping them in place. It’s also employed as a foundational layer for structures like roads and buildings, ensuring stability and preventing settlement.

Benefits:

  • Excellent drainage properties
  • Resistant to decay and deterioration
  • Distributes loads evenly, preventing subsidence

Gravel and stones

Gravel and stones are natural aggregates formed through the erosion of rocks. They come in various sizes and shapes, making them useful for a range of construction applications. From driveways to landscaping projects, gravel and stones provide both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Application: Gravel and stones find widespread use in landscaping, road construction and concrete production. Their range of sizes allows for modification based on the specific needs of the project. For example, larger stones may be used for erosion control, while smaller gravel is ideal for creating durable surfaces.

Benefits:

  • Excellent drainage capabilities
  • Provides a visually appealing finish
  • Can be easily modified for different purposes

MOT type 1

MOT type 1, or Ministry of Transport type 1, is a granular sub-base material. Composed of a mixture of crushed rock and fine aggregates like sand, it is engineered for use as a base layer in road and driveway construction, ensuring a solid foundation for further layers.

Application: MOT type 1 is an important component in road construction, providing stability and load-bearing capabilities. It serves as a foundation for asphalt and concrete surfaces, offering a dependable base that minimises settling and boosts durability.

Benefits:

  • High load-bearing capacity
  • Excellent compaction properties
  • Resistant to frost and weathering

Hardcore

Hardcore is a type of aggregate consisting of recycled construction and demolition waste, including concrete, bricks and tiles. It is used as a sub-base material, adding strength and stability to construction projects.

Application: Commonly used in the construction of roads and foundations, hardcore acts as a robust sub-base layer. Its use helps distribute loads, prevent settlement and enhance the overall structural integrity of the project.

Benefits:

  • Sustainable use of recycled materials
  • Enhances load-bearing capacity
  • Minimises environmental impact through waste recycling.
