When it comes to constructing a sturdy shed base, selecting the appropriate aggregate is essential for providing your concrete slabs with a reliable sub-base. In this guide, the Aggregates Express team will explore various types of aggregates to help you make an informed decision for your shed foundation.

While all of the below aggregate types would work well for a shed base, if you want the most cost-effective solution that balances strength and functionality, we would recommend opting for MOT Type 1.

MOT Type 1

MOT Type 1, or Ministry of Transport Type 1, is a well-graded granular sub-base material that meets strict specifications for construction projects. It consists of a blend of crushed rocks and stone dust, providing excellent load-bearing capabilities for your concrete slabs.

MOT Type 1 is a durable and compact aggregate, making it suitable for shed bases that require improved structural integrity. It’s usually used in professional construction, but if you’re creating a larger shed and want to maximise its performance, it is also a reliable choice for DIY shed projects.

Recycled 6F2 Sub Base

Another option for a robust sub-base is recycled 6F2. The term “6F2” refers to a specific type of granular fill material commonly used in construction projects. 6F2 typically consists of crushed concrete and other types of construction and demolition waste with the impurities removed. The result is a versatile, environmentally friendly sub-base material that can be used as a sustainable alternative to traditional aggregates, but still has more than enough strength and load-bearing capacity for shed base concrete slabs.

Hardcore

Hardcore is a dense and robust aggregate that consists of recycled concrete or crushed bricks. This material is ideal for creating a solid foundation with exceptional load-bearing capacity. Hardcore is particularly effective in preventing ground movement and settling, ensuring a stable surface for your shed.

While it may be slightly more expensive than other options, its durability and resilience make it a good long-term investment in the stability of your shed base.

Considerations

Laying a shed base? Once you have your aggregates sorted, here are some tips to keep in mind when you get started with the project.

  • Ground preparation: Before adding any aggregate, ensure proper ground preparation. Remove any loose organic matter, level the ground and use a membrane to suppress weed growth.
  • Thickness: The thickness of your concrete sub-base layer will depend on the specific requirements of your shed and the type of aggregate chosen. Follow manufacturer recommendations and local building regulations to get this right.
  • Compaction: Compact the aggregate layer thoroughly to achieve a solid sub-base. This step is essential for preventing future settlement, so take it slow. Once you’ve created a strong, level surface, you can now start laying your concrete slabs.
